Shomrei Takes NW6 Cricket Derby From Hampstead Shul

The Shomrei Sharks Cricket team won a thrilling match against the Dennington Devils from Hampstead Shul on Sunday, 10 July.  The Devils opened the batting in this 25 overs match on a fine afternoon at Hampstead Heath Extension. Their slow scoring rate was testament to our tight bowling and excellent fielding but also to a lethargic pitch following a morning rain shower. Nevertheless, Ishan Ganjoor (whose honorary membership of Hampstead Shul is being reviewed) batted at number 3 and was their top scorer with 21 in an innings total of 86. Their final 3 wickets fell for just 2 runs. Well done to our captain, Jonathan Metzer for his fine bowling performance; he took 3 wickets in 4 overs for just 11 runs.

The Shomrei Sharks went in to bat with reasonable confidence that 87 runs was achievable in order to take the match. Our openers performed well adding 45 runs (Eugene Atkinson 15, Michoel Mayerfeld 12, Erez Erlbaum 8, Extras 10) and we seemed well on the way to a victory. But thanks to some deadly Devils bowling (Barnaby Powell-3 for 8 including 2 maidens) and very sharp fielding as well as a controversial LBW decision, our middle order batsmen took a hammering leaving us with a lot of ground to make up with 7 wickets down. Fortunately for us, the Devils then bowled a disastrous over conceding 18 runs mostly to our very in-form Haris, batting at number 7. Man of the Match Haris powered us on to victory in a superb innings of 31 which included 6 boundaries one of which was a six. We were all on our feet for the electrifying final over.

The Shomrei Sharks total of 89 for 9 was achieved in 20 overs.

Many thanks to the Umpires, Dr Maurice Smith and David Dwek, to the players and spectators and most of all to the Dennington Devils under the superb captaincy of Barnaby Powell for a very entertaining afternoon. The Sharks’ victory means that we are now 3-2 up overall on matches against our NW6 rivals.
